"Downed" Chapter1 (You are invited to String Along)

Posted on January 13, 2011 at 12:20 AM

I can hardly breathe, there is no room here in this total insanity.

FILL THE AIR. Time has come to a screeching halt and the smell of death haunts every living creature that remains.

I hear others praying in the distance while others simply scream in agony. There are those who are trapped and others who are too injured to help themselves. I seem to be literally uninjured, except for a terrible headache and the fact that I am in the midst of bodies stacked atop each other.

My eyes burn from the methane gas emissions and I fear that if I don’t get free that I am going to die like I feel many have already done.

I start to vigorously squirm and kick bodies away from me and slowly inch my way towards anywhere but where I am right now.

Someone grabbed my arm and squeezed so hard I couldn’t break free, I hollered “let me go! Please turn me loose!” and this gruff voice said to me ‘ Please dude, don’t leave me, don’t leave me here” I finally broke free and said “ I’m sorry but I don’t know what I am going to do yet, I am trying to find a way out. If I get out I will send help I promise.”

I asked, “ Did you hear me?”… He never answered.

I crawled ahead over the bodies of humans dead and alive. Men, Women, Old, and young I suspect, but I cannot see them, I just hear the grunts as I crawl over their bodies towards what I hope will be freedom from this nightmare that happens to be a hard reality.

As I crawl along this dark path of broken souls, I finally see a light, a crack in the darkness and I start to move for what seems to me to be a quicker pace, but it could be just my mind playing tricks on me, but no matter, I proceed on until I arrive at the light.

I push away the hot metal, and it falls away and disappear. I pull myself forward by using my hands on either side of the opening and quickly pushed myself back into the hole because of the frightening image I see below. Even in the dark of night I can see that we were high upon a mountain top enveloped into a crater that seems to lead down to nowhere. I decide to just lay still and wait for the light of day.
